TONIE VAN MARLE

Nineteenth-century cabinets of rarities are a source of inspiration for my objects in glass cases. I enjoy making imaginary organisms, such as a series of plants, called Blaschkas, assembled from laboratory glass, optical lenses, iridescent glass, organic material and found objects. My work creates optical illusion, is deceptive and humorously refers to nature.

Recently I created a project called "The Portable Museum", a series of foldable cases with various mini-size prints.

My most recent work consists of very detailed cut-out drawings that give a 3-D effect when hung in layers. For inspiration, I draw from the language of nature and organisms, but with a free interpretation thereof.

A different theme in my work relates to traumatic historical events that I present in various different projects: cut-out drawings, prints and installations.
